Go To The Sunny Side
There’s a time of year where without even noticing it, we suddenly switch from seeking shade to seeking sun. Our respite now found in warmth instead of cool.
It’s most likely a day in November, or maybe wherever you are located it holds out until December. But it’s cold outside and as I make seemingly empty threats about moving to a warmer location, I’ve been thinking more about this season where we find ourselves chasing the sun or walking on the sunny side of the street. Going to the sunny side is a choice we make. When you are walking and realize you are in the shade, but that the sidewalk on the other side of the road is drenched in light and sun, you choose to either keep walking in the shade or make a way to the sun.
And we have this same choice often in our minds. When dealing with a variety of obstacles or hardships. Sometimes we choose to tense up and suffer a little, saying “it’s too hard to get over there”, “there’s no crosswalk”, “this is the path I’m already on.” Sometimes we choose to just keep walking in darkness, to be cold and keep complaining about being cold. When really, we could be just a little bit warmer, or at least a little brighter. While it’s not always the case, in many of those situations there is a sunny side. It’s up to us to look for it, to see it and be willing to choose it, to run across when we have the chance, to make a way to the warmth and the light.
It’s that time of year, it’s colder, it’s darker. It’s easy to complain, to dwell. So, when you have the chance and the choice, find a way to get yourself over to the sunny side.
