I took a day trip to New York this week. One of my very favorite things about being in the Northeast is the ability to quickly hop up to New York for a day and night. I was sitting in some standstill traffic on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, headed to Williamsburg and instead of being annoyed by the traffic, I found myself in this reflective state, bringing forth some sweet memories. I recognized so many buildings from previous drives on the BQE, my brother used to live in Brooklyn and my husband had family there too and there was this season a few years back where we were driving up to Brooklyn all the time. As I slowly creeped up to and past old buildings I’d seen before, I noticed this comfortable, happy, familiar feeling creeping up inside too.
I was reminded that frequency brings familiarity.
This is true for my work life and yours too. I thought about some of the things that still feel unknown to me in the world of book promotion, like pitching more stores for events or getting my face in the shot and sharing lessons in real time. These things make me nervous at times and feel unknown to me, but only because I haven’t done them enough. I have to increase my frequency and repetition. I often learn lessons more than once or in more ways than one, and here’s another example. I’ve been on a few podcasts lately and I’m loving being a podcast guest. The last one I did, my brother text me and said “your message is getting so tight, it’s clear you are getting your reps in.”
It’s okay if it feels unknown or unfamiliar at first, it’s because it’s new. Keep showing up, over and over again. You’ll learn the roads and feel confident and comfortable on them.
